A DR. PROFESSORA, CIENTISTA, JORNALISTA, ESCRITORA, COMENTADORA, ETC.

Claude E. Shannon (1916–2001) the father of: A Mathematical Theory of Communication

Claude E. Shannon (1916–2001) has been called "the father of information theory". His theory for the first time considered communication as a rigorously stated mathematical problem in statistics and gave communications engineers a way to determine the capacity of a communication channel in terms of the common currency of bits. The transmission part of the theory is not concerned with the meaning (semantics) of the message conveyed, though the complementary wing of information theory concerns itself with content through lossy compression of messages subject to a fidelity criterion.

Nella Maissa, Pianist, Born in Turin in 1914, Settled in Portugal in 1939
PAUL HINDEMITH
Ludus Tonalis
Nella Maissa (piano)
Strauss- 4286(CD)Reference Recording - Aldwell (Pro Piano)
Born in Turin in 1914, pianist Nella Maissa settled in Portugal in 1939. She devoted much of her career to championing both new music and lesser-known older repertoire by Portuguese composers, like Bomtempo. Among Maissa's Portuguese premieres were the third piano concertos of Prokofiev and Bartok and Hindemith's 1942 piano cycle Ludus Tonalis. She recorded Ludus Tonalis for radio broadcast in 1958, and that transmission is preserved here. Those who consider (not without justification) the work to represent Hindemith's dryer, more doctrinaire side may well change their minds after hearing Maissa. What a fabulous pianist she is! The fugues are delineated with intimate drama, intelligently scaled dynamics, and mesmerizing, dry-point articulation that recalls Glenn Gould's contrapuntal keyboard mastery. And Maissa always unearths the music's underlying wit, as revealed in her skittish, light-fingered virtuosity in the Ninth Interludium, or in the playfulness she brings to the usually banged out March (Interludium 13). The Valse (Interludium 23) nonchalantly trickles off the pianist's fingers--and leaves you bewitched. And I don't think I've heard the arpeggio sequences in the Praeludium and Postludium (the latter is the Praeludium played backwards) so ravishingly shaded.
Each movement is announced (in Portuguese) before it is played. Some listeners may find this distracting, but it actually helps you focus your attention more sharply and individually on each piece. The sound is acceptable considering its provenance, although I suspect the studio piano was less than a regulation concert grand. But that doesn't matter. Nella Maissa invests this music with meaning and profound musicality, and I heartily recommend that you hear her.

Jack Kilby, Inventor of the Integrated Circuit, Dies at 81
Mr. Kilby invented the first monolithic integrated circuit, which laid the foundation for the field of modern microelectronics, moving the industry into a world of miniaturization and integration that continues today. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000 for his role in the invention of the integrated circuit.
"In my opinion, there are only a handful of people whose works have truly transformed the world and the way we live in it -- Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers and Jack Kilby," said TI Chairman Tom Engibous. "If there was ever a seminal invention that transformed not only our industry but our world, it was Jack's invention of the first integrated circuit."
A man of few words, Mr. Kilby is remembered fondly by friends and associates for being in every sense of the word a gentleman and a gentle man. At 6 foot 6 inches in height, he was occasionally called the "gentle giant" in the press.
"Ever practical and low-key, with good humor and quiet grace, Jack was a man with every right to be boastful, yet never was," said Mr. Engibous. Mr. Kilby was always quick to credit the thousands of engineers who followed him for their impact on growing the industry and changing the world. "For those of us who were fortunate enough to have known him, it's that dual legacy for which I personally will always feel privileged to have known Jack -- not only the quality of what he did, but the quality of who he was," said Mr. Engibous.
Early Interest in Electronics
Mr. Kilby knew he wanted to be an engineer relatively early in life. When he was in high school, his father ran a small power company with customers scattered across the rural western part of Kansas. When a severe ice storm downed telephone and power lines, Mr. Kilby's father worked with amateur radio operators to communicate with his customers. This event triggered the younger Kilby's lifelong fascination with electronics.
He pursued that interest at the University of Illinois. World War II interrupted his studies, when Mr. Kilby joined the Army. Following the war, he returned to the University of Illinois, completing his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1947. Upon graduation, he took a position with Centralab in Milwaukee, where he first worked with transistors, the building blocks for integrated circuits. While at Centralab, he pursued graduate studies in electrical engineering at the University of Wisconsin and received a master's degree in 1950.
Creating the Future
Mr. Kilby moved to Dallas in 1958 to work for TI. As a new employee that summer, he was not yet entitled to the mass August vacation that was customary among TI employees at the time. It was in this relatively quiet time that the idea of the integrated circuit first came to Mr. Kilby.
"I was sitting at a desk, probably stayed there a little longer than usual," he recalled in a 1980 interview. "Most of it formed pretty clearly during the course of that day. When I was finished, I had some drawings in a notebook, which I showed my supervisor when he returned. There was some slight skepticism, but basically they realized its importance."
Mr. Kilby and TI officials put the circuit to the test September 12, 1958. It worked, and his invention transformed the industry. In 1960, the company announced the first chips for customer evaluation. Two years later, TI won its first major integrated circuit contract to design and build a family of 22 special circuits for the Minuteman missile. The integrated circuit remains at the heart of all electronics today.
His Work Continues
Mr. Kilby held several engineering management positions at TI between 1960 and 1968, when he was named assistant vice president. In 1970, he became director of engineering and technology for the Components Group before taking a leave of absence to become an independent consultant. Mr. Kilby officially retired from TI in 1983, but he continued to do consulting work with TI. He maintained a significant relationship with the company until his death.
"Jack was one of the true pioneers of the semiconductor industry," said TI President and Chief Executive Officer Rich Templeton. "Every engineer, myself included, owes no small part of their livelihood to the work Jack Kilby did here at Texas Instruments. We will miss him."
In addition to his TI career, Mr. Kilby held the rank of Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M University from 1978 to 1984. In 1990, he lent his name to The Kilby Awards Foundation, which commemorates "the power of one individual to make a significant impact on society." Its international awards program honors exceptional individuals for their contributions to society through science, technology, innovation, invention and education.
Recognizing His Contributions
Mr. Kilby considered himself first and foremost an engineer, a profession he viewed as transforming ideas into practical realities. He held more than 60 patents for a variety of electronics inventions. Among these were the handheld electronic calculator and the thermal printer, both of which he co- invented.
In addition to the Nobel Prize, Mr. Kilby received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to science, technology and the electronics industry. He is one of only 13 Americans to receive both the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology, the highest technical awards given by the U.S. government. In 1993, he was awarded the Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology. Mr. Kilby also received the first international Charles Stark Draper Prize, the world's top engineering award, from the National Academy of Engineering in 1989. In addition, he is honored in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's National Inventors Hall of Fame, celebrating individuals whose ideas have changed the world.
Mr. Kilby was the recipient of honorary degrees from several institutions of higher learning including the University of Miami, the Rochester Institute of Technology, the University of Illinois, Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M University and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
(For a more complete listing of his honors and awards, see http://www.ti.com/corp/docs/kilbyctr/kilby.shtml#honors )
Family and Friends
Mr. Kilby leaves his family -- daughters Janet Kilby Cameron of Palisade, Colorado, and Ann Kilby of Austin, Texas; five granddaughters, Caitlan, Marcy and Gwen Cameron of Palisade, Colorado, and Erica and Katrina (Katie) Venhuizen of Austin; and son-in-law Thomas Cameron -- and friends, colleagues and admirers throughout the company, the industry and the world. His wife, Barbara Annegers Kilby, and sister, Jane Kilby, preceded him in death.

Supercomputer fixes software problems on its own
Supercomputer-on-a-chip' microprocessor revealed
Supercomputing now available to all
Field Programmable Gate Array, Wikipedia
Self-wiring supercomputer is cool and compact
Supercomputer fixes software problems on its own
An experimental supercomputer made from hardware that can reconfigure itself to tackle different software problems is being built by researchers in Scotland.
The system under construction at the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre - part of Edinburgh University, UK - will use Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chips instead of conventional microprocessors.
FPGAs can be reconfigured using software to mimic computer processing equipment that is physically designed to take on specialised tasks. In contrast, conventional microprocessors are designed to act as fixed, general purpose processing devices. Each FPGA chip consists of a block of programmable logic gates that can be electronically organised into different types of circuit.

The TICS solution consists of three components:
* TICS Analyzer. The TICS analyzer generates coding standard violations for the individual software engineer. It is a small layer on top of existing code checkers. The TICS analyzer combines the results of the code checkers in such a way that they are presented in a uniform way that reflects the coding standard that is used by the engineer. The TICS analyzer is available as a command-line tool but it is usually also integrated in the used programming environment. Please read on here.
* TICS Database. The TICS Database component concerns a database that contains all kinds of quality data. It is updated every night by means of a batch run on the accepted (consolidated) code archive. Apart from all violations, the quality database also contains include relations, lines of code (various ways), build relations and some other metrics.
* TICS Viewer. The TICS Viewer is a web-based Intranet application that displays overviews of the quality data of the TICS Database. With the aid of the TICS Viewer one receives a graphical answer on questions such as "What is the historical trend concerning static quality?", "What is my current confidence factor?", "What is the number of violations per KLOC for the topmost modules?", etc.

CULTURE KIOSQUE KlassikNet: Interviews
MULLING OVER MULLOVA
LONDON - Viktoria Mullova's credentials as a leading modern virtuoso are impeccable. Since her arrival in the west some ten years ago, she has forged a position for herself as one of the world's great violinists and her repertoire is impressively wide. Yet she held surprises in store for us. First there came her recording of the unaccompanied sonatas and partitas by J.S.Bach, issued in 1994. Suddenly we were confronted with playing on the modern violin that was imbued with all the lightness and dance that one has come to expect from baroque performers. Now, there has just come out a disc of Bach concertos (Philips Classics) played with her own ensemble of like-minded musicians. A delight from beginning to end. Tense alertness in the swift movements, delicate and sensitive embroidery in the slow movements. And overall, a spirit of authentic authenticity...that of the musician.
I called on Mullova in her south London home recently. She took me into the large and sparsely-furnished ground floor room and squatted on a cushion on the floor. As usual, I was struck by the grace of her movements and it occurred to me once again that had I not known that she was a violinist, I would have sworn that she was a dancer, for all the world like some sort of latter-day Isadora Duncan.
Mullova's presence is calm and contained, whatever may be the fires smouldering beneath. She is quite clearly an intensely private person. It is probably this aspect of her nature that has betrayed some musicians into claiming that her performances tend to lack in warmth. To charge such people with preferring to listen with their eyes rather than their ears would certainly be excessive. But it is true that the history of musical criticism is littered with examples of otherwise thoroughly-reliable and sensitive observers making occasional and bewildering lapses of judgment.
I immediately tackled Mullova on her Bach performance style. "How did you come to this? Surely you did not learn to play Bach like that during your youth in Russia?" She laughed and said, "Good heavens, no!" She explained that she had met the bassoonist, Marco Postinghel, some four years ago and had let herself be guided by him. "He is very knowledgeable about music and particularly baroque music. I think he's a genius."
Mullova worked with Postinghel regularly for several months. "At first, I needed constant lessons; I couldn't do without him. Not only was it a question of learning a new style; there were also technical things that I had to work out. Gradually, I was able to be on my own. I made the recording of the Bach sonatas and partitas. Actually, I think I've made progress since then in the performance of this music."
She has also listened to recordings made by many of the leading early music performers and attended their concerts. She is particularly admirative of John Eliot Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists. "Gardiner is such a fine musician; and you've only got to watch his musicians in concert to see how much they are enjoying themselves. The only thing, of course, is that they are playing on period instruments." I asked her if she would ever consider playing the baroque violin. Almost sadly, she shook her head. "No, it's just too different."
Indeed, it is unlikely that anybody today could maintain a concert career at the highest level on both instruments. There would be too many adjustments to be maintained constantly. Even the changes of pitch would be a permanent source of confusion.
I asked about the repertoire of Mullova's ensemble. "So far, it's what's on the disc. We made the recording on one day during our tour last year. But we are thinking of doing the Schubert octet. And we shall be preparing some Couperin for the Berlin Festival. Everybody tells me, however, that French music is very difficult to get right, so I'm looking forward to working at it. But the great thing is that in the ensemble, we all want to be sure of enjoying ourselves. Otherwise, it simply isn't worth doing."
In December last year, it was reported in the press that the performance Mullova was due to give at the Royal Albert Hall of the Tchaikowsky Violin Concerto would be her last one of this particular work. Was this really so? "Yes, it is just too exhausting. It's difficult to imagine just how tiring it is. And to be quite honest, for the amount of effort you have to put in, the musical content isn't really worth it. I'd much prefer to spend my time on learning and performing more interesting modern repertoire."
This led the conversation on to a terrain familiar to violinists the world over: aches and pains. Mullova said that until recently, she had been free from trouble. But now, somebody comes regularly to give her massage, on account of pains on the right hand side of her neck. "Having children has probably had its effect on my body. [Mullova has a son of five and a daughter of one-and-a half.] Also, the position we have to adopt to play is a crazy one." She demonstrated. "Just look at that. And then, I have a long neck. Fortunately, there are shoulder-rests today. I just couldn't do without one. In any case, almost everybody uses one now."
I told her that it was precisely on account of the discomfort of playing the violin and the viola that in my retirement I had decided to play the 'cello. So much more comfortable.
Her face lit up. "Can you play The Swan yet?" I assured her that my ambitions were far more limited. Renaissance music and any of the easier Haydn and Mozart cello parts.
"I tried the cello," she said, but it's so different in everything. There's the bow hold and the position of the strings, everything."
"For how long did you try?"
"Oh, for half-an-hour at least. Than I gave up." I suggested to her that even with her immense talent, half-an-hour was putting it a bit on the short side.
Finally, what about practice? "I find I don't need to do so much as I used to. And if three days go by without my playing, I can get back into it with a day's practice. It used not to be like that."
As I walked away from Mullova's house, I could not help feeling amazed that an established international virtuoso had been willing to bring into question her whole style of playing music which for most violinists is the essential sustenance from cradle to grave, the violin music of J.S. Bach. More importantly, Viktoria Mullova has demonstrated that it really is possible to be utterly faithful to the fundamental message of the music and perform it on an instrument for which it was not conceived, something which up to now has not been readily admitted.
