HP Wins $48.5 Million Contract with European Commission for Schengen Information System (SIS II) and the Visa Information System (VIS)

HP Wins $48.5 Million Contract with European Commission Posted by Matt on Friday, Apr 29, 2005, 8:31 pm 0 comments Schengen Information System - SIS Deal aims to increase EU cross-border security and combat terrorism and crime. HP yesterday announced that it has signed a $48.5 million contract with the European Commission in consortium with Steria to develop two important central information systems, the second generation of the Schengen Information System (SIS II) and the Visa Information System (VIS). The SIS is the largest border control and police information system in the world and the development of SIS II is an important precondition for the lifting of border controls between current members of the Schengen area and the 10 member states that acceded to the European Union in May 2004. The VIS will manage visa requests for entry to European countries of the Schengen area. HP was selected in consortium with Steria as well as two other European companies - Mummert in Germany and Primesphere in Luxembourg - to provide a high-quality technology model designed for the two information systems with a goal of hopefully offering good value for taxpayers' money.

I Finally Cracked My Own WEP!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have experimented with Airsnort for quite a while now but could not seem to capture any "interesting" packets on my AP. King_Ice_Flash told me that my newer firmare in my AP was filtering out the weak packets http://forums.netstumbler.com/showthread.php?t=12358. I have then seek out to try the new Aircrack. Never did I expect that my first successful attempt was carried out on Windows! I thought to share some of my experience and results here. It took me about 18 hours, 1900000+ packets and 1070000+(maybe lesser) unique IVs to get the job done on a 128-bit WEP encyption. The size of the pcap file is about 1.07GB. What I did to generate traffic across the network is using my PPC to ping my PC in a loop using packet size of 1024KB. Maybe if you have a second normal PC you could transfer huge files and will take alot faster? The cracking itself is very fast. About 15 seconds. I am using Motorola AP/Router. Now everyone should know why they must change their WEP key frequently!

Berkeley Laptop Thief is cared out of his Wits by Professor

Wednesday, April 20, 2005 Berkeley laptop thief is scared out of his wits by professor The last few minutes of this video from a biology class at Berkeley is of professor explaining the terrifying consequences that will soon befall the student that stole his laptop. Hell, I'm 500 miles away from Berkeley and I'm scared after watching this. (Forward to 48:50. It's a RealPlayer file, unfortunately, so be prepared for it to stop playing at least three times while you're watching it). Link (Thanks Kevin!) UPDATE: Here's a torrent of the pertinent part of the video (In QuickTime, not Real!) Link (Thanks, Matt Yohe!) UPDATE:Sean Graham says: "For those people who don't want to deal with RealPlayer I made a very lo-fi mp3 of the audio from the "Stolen Laptop" lecture posted earlier today... "I trimmed out the actual educational part of the lecture and just left the 'good part.'" Link UPDATE: Tim says: I've transcribed Professor Rine's speech to the thief who stole his laptop. It's available here.

Web Server Comparisons

Web Server Comparisons thttpd - tiny/turbo/throttling HTTP server "...factoring out I/O, the primary determinant to server performance is the concurrency strategy." -- JAWS: Understanding High Performance Web Systems Some comparisons between various web servers. We look at features, sizes, and performance. The headers in the table are links to explanatory notes below. Bright green entries indicate something unusually good, and red entries are something bad, sometimes with a link to a note explaining why. Don't get too excited over the performance figures. Most of these servers have enough oomph to keep a T1 saturated, running on a lowly 100MHz Pentium or maybe even a 486. Very very few web applications need more power than that. So, the fact that Apache is not that fast shouldn't be of concern to most people.

OFFERTORY Miserere mei, Deus -- Gregorio Allegri(1582-1652) Miserere mei, Deus: secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. Et secun-dum multitudinem miserationum tuarum: dele iniquitatem meam. Ampliuslava me ab iniquitate mea: et a peccato meo munda me. Quoniaminiquitatem meam ego cognosco: et peccatum meum contra me est sem-per. Tibi soli peccavi et malum coram te feci: ut justificeris in sermonibustuis et vincas cum iudicaris. Ecce enim in iniquitatibus conceptus sum: etin peccatis concepit me mater mea. Ecce enim veritatem dilexisti: incertaet occulta sapientiae tuae manifestasti mihi. Asperges me hysopo etmundabor: lavabis me et super nivem de albabor. Auditui meo dabisgaudium et laetitiam: exultabunt ossa humiliata. Averte faciem tuam apeccatis meis: et omnes iniquitates meas dele. Cor mundum crea in meDeus: et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis. Ne projicias me a facie tua: et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me. Rede mihi laetitiamsalutaris tui: et spiritu principali confirma me. ..................................................................................................................... English Version Have mercy upon me, O God, after thy great goodness: according to themultitude of thy mercies do away mine offenses. Wash me throughly frommy wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge myfaults: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee only have I sinned, anddone this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified in thy saying, andclear when thou art judged. Behold, I was shapen in wickedness: and insin hath my mother conceived me. But lo, thou requirest truth in theinward parts: and shall make me to understand wisdom secretly. Thoushalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: thou shalt wash me, andI shall be whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness:that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Turn thy face from mysins: and put out all my misdeeds. Make me a clean heart, O God: andrenew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence: andtake not thy holy Spirit from me. O give me the comfort of thy help again:and establish me with thy free Spirit. Then shall I teach thy ways unto thewicked: and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou that art the God of my health: and my tongue shallsing of thy righteousness. Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord: and mymouth shall shew thy praise. For thou desirest no sacrifice, else would Igive it thee: but thou delightest not in burnt-offerings. The sacrifice ofGod is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt thounot despise. O be favourable and gracious unto Sion: build thou the wallsof Jerusalem. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteous-ness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations: then shall they offer youngbullocks upon thine altar. —Psalm 51

Gregorio Allegri: Miserere mei and the Sistine Chapel Choir in the 18th century. by Ben Byram-Wigfield -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some have stood in an opinion, which to me seems very improbable, that men accustomed to descanting can sing together on a plainsong, without singing either false chords or forbidden descant, one to another, which, till I see it, I will ever think impossible. For though they should all be most excellent men, and every one of their lessons by itself so well framed to the ground, yet it is impossible for them to be true, one to another, unless one man should cause all the rest to sing the same as he sang before them. Thomas Morley, A Plain & Easy Introduction to Practical Music, 1597 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Performance Practice It is clear that throughout the eighteenth century Allegri's work was performed as written in MSS 185 & 206, ornamentation aside. It is this that the fourteen year old Mozart would have heard in 1770, and it is from this that the piece's reputation spread. The similarity between the ornaments in MS 31525 and those detailed by Alfieri, Amann and Mendelssohn would suggest a certain authority. The biggest legend lies in the practice of the performance itself. These ornaments are not Baroque additions to the work, but pre-extant Renaissance ones! They are originally based on the Papal Chapel choir's ability to improvise counterpoint around a cantus firmus, and with this came ornamentation of certain contrapuntal sequences. Such masters as Ockeghem and Josquin have left records of how they expected specific polyphonic movement to be ornamented, particularly movement up and down the scale. Today, imitative decoration is still camped up by Lay Clerks singing verse anthems in cathedrals all over Britain, who can recognise the appropriate gem for a certain harmony. So, it may be that Allegri composed the work to show off these existing ornaments in a new light. The similarity between the recorded ornaments over an hundred years confirms that this was not improvisation, but a regulated system. However, by the eighteenth century, this ability was almost extinct outside the Vatican, so did they still perform in the same way as their forebears, or did they learn it by wrote? It is not clear whether the Papal Choir were still tutored in such traditions of Palestrina by the eighteenth century. But could the ornaments presented here be sung ad libitum without any collusion? Over the history of the work, it is hard to imagine that this was so rarely consigned to paper. Indeed, the music for Tenebrae was rehearsed, a rare treat in those days, because it would be performed in near darkness. The source of the ornaments is beyond doubt from the renaissance teachings of such masters as Palestrina. How they were performed in the 18th century is still questionable. Those ornaments in the first choir, shown in MS 31525 and elsewhere, are clearly not based in polyphonic theory, but merely a baroque attempt to complement its renaissance partner. Of course, it may be that MS 185 is the ornamentation for the choir a 5. Burney's model for this choir is then another refinement, possibly written by the young Mozart himself. Legends The legend of secrecy stemmed, no doubt, from the failure to appreciate the source of the ornaments. The only rite of initiation was the standard musical training of the day. If there was a decree of excommunication put on illegal copyists, then it can only have been an attempt to stop all copying from the choir's library. The number of unauthorised sources outside the Vatican bear testiment to this. There were supposedly three authorised copies outside the Vatican, held by Emperor Leopold I, the King of Portugal, and Padre Martini. Leopold had requested the Pope that the imperial choir in Vienna might perform it, and he was duly sent a copy, but it was clearly unornamented, as he complained to the Pope that he had been sent some inferior work. Padre Martini (1706 - 1784) was sent one out of the high regard in which he was held throughout Europe as a music scholar. Burney is said to have made his copy from the signer Santarelli, but then compared it with that of Padre Martini in 1770. It is curious, therefore, that his choir a 5 is more ornate than the Vatican sources, and his choir a 4 less so. Mozart also visited Padre Martini in Bologna prior to his attending the Holy Week performance in 1770. It was at this performance that he, at the age of 14, famously copied out the forbidden music after one hearing. In the summer of that year, Mozart composed his own Miserere, K85, which was influenced by what he had heard. By co-incidence, Padre Martini had studied theology at San Filippo Neri, where Allegri was buried. Wireless USB Devices May Appear This Year

Wireless USB Devices May Appear This Year Specifications for wireless USB 1.0 to be final soon, Intel says. Version 1.0 of the Wireless USB (Universal Serial Bus) specification, which is being promoted as the successor to the USB data transfer method between electronics devices, should be approved by mid-May, according to an Intel representative. The Wireless USB specification provides for a data transfer speed of 480 megabits per second over distances of about 3 yards, and it will work at lower speeds up to a distance of about 11 yards. A candidate Version 1.0 specification was sent to the Wireless USB Promoter Group on April 1 for a 45-day review, said Jeff Ravencraft, technology strategist for Intel's Communications Technology Lab, at a press event during the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) Japan 2005, on Friday.

Hitachi announced a method to store up to 10 times as much

Hitachi announced this week that it had developed a new recording method to store up to 10 times as much data on a hard disk. To explain this feat, Hitachi has posted a hilarious Flash animation to help you 'Get Perpendicular'. Hitachi achieves industry-leading areal densities via Perpendicular Recording In March 2005, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies demonstrated an areal density of 230 gigabits per square inch (Gb/in2) on perpendicular recording technology, the highest areal density achieved to date based on vertical recording. This accomplishment represents a doubling of today’s highest data densities on longitudinal recording technology. At the current rate of growth, Hitachi expects to see products shipping at 230 Gb/in2 in 2007, translating into storage capacities of up to 20 gigabytes* on Hitachi’s one-inch Microdrive and up to one terabyte on the Hitachi 3.5-inch Deskstar hard drive. For a quick and entertaining look at the benefit that perpendicular recording delivers, view our animation “Get Perpendicular” (To view the animation you will need the Flash Player.) Why Perpendicular Recording is needed One of the key challenges facing the hard drive industry is overcoming the constraints imposed by the superparamagnetic effect, which occurs when the microscopic magnetic grains on the disk become so tiny that they interfere with one another, thus losing their ability to hold their magnetic orientations. The result is “flipped bits” – bits whose magnetic north and south poles suddenly and spontaneously reverse – that corrupt data, rendering it and the storage device unreliable and thus unusable. Perpendicular recording defined Longitudinal recording, as its name indicates, aligns the data bits horizontally, parallel to the surface of the disk. In contrast, perpendicular recording aligns the bits vertically, perpendicular to the disk, which allows additional room on a disk to pack more data, thus, enabling higher recording densities. * 1 gigabyte = 1 billion bytes More information on Perpendicular Recording and Hitachi storage technologies Perpendicular Recording: A Boon for Consumer Electronics [PDF & HTML formats] Hitachi GST Research & Technology web pages

Google has added satellite technology to its mapping service, in a move to outdo competitors Yahoo, Ask Jeeves and others. The new satellite feature allows consumers to get an aerial photo snapshot of the location for which they are searching. People can enter an address and click on the "Satellite" link to view an area, zoom in or see neighboring locations by moving the cursor. "Thinking about spending time at the shore this summer? Search for hotels with Google Local and check out the 'beach' in 'beachfront,'" John Hanke, general manager of Google's Keyhole unit, wrote in a blog. Satellite imaging company Keyhole, which Google acquired in October, provided the technology that allowed the search giant to launch the new mapping feature. Aerial photos are just the latest tool Google has added to its search service as it battles it out with industry players such as Yahoo, Ask Jeeves and Microsoft. Google, which in February quietly released its Maps beta, is seeking to retain its top spot on the popularity charts, but Yahoo and Microsoft are gaining some ground. Google Maps (satellite view)

Internet To Get a 1000 Percent Speed Boost

The speed with which data moves around the Internet could jump more than 1,000 percent with the approval by a Colorado group of a new cable standard. The industry's standard-settings unit, CableLabs, plans to endorse this month technology that will let operators boost speeds from 400 percent to 1,600 percent over existing lines, USA Today said Wednesday. January 5, 2005 2:26PM Linksys' Speed and Range eXpansion equipment is based on multiple in, multiple out technology that is "a key component in the upcoming 802.11n standard," the company says. It can reach up to three times farther than 802.11g, Linksys claims, and wireless network performance can be improved by up to eight times. Motorola Canopy Wireless Broadband Solutions Deploying and delivering low-cost broadband access is now faster and easier than ever before, enabling enterprises to easily extend their networks, replace costly T1 services, provide VoIP and more. Click for Whitepapers, Case Studies and more. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Linksys has unveiled of a range of 802.11g wireless local area network products that incorporate multiple in, multiple out (Mimo) technology which has yet to be ratified as an agreed standard. The company said that its Speed and Range eXpansion (SRX) equipment is based on Mimo technology which is "a key component in the upcoming 802.11n standard." Mimo uses two radios and three antennas on a wireless router or client adapter for improved performance in range and speed. Linksys -- a division of Cisco -- claimed that its Wireless-G Router with SRX and Wireless-G PC Card with SRX can provide faster wireless network throughput, reduced dead spots and increased range over standard 802.11g networks. According to Linksys, SRX can reach up to three times farther and wireless network performance can be enhanced by up to eight times compared to the throughput of standard 802.11g technology. The company went on to say that the SRX kit is "designed for interoperability and enhanced performance with all standards-compliant 802.11g and 802.11b products." Mixed wireless environments, such as networks containing SRX, 802.11g and 802.11b products, can operate each client at its own maximum data rate, according to Linksys. "A common complaint about wireless networking in the home is that customers cannot get the wireless signal to reach certain rooms or areas around their home," said Tim Thornton, director of product marketing at Linksys. "Our SRX products help extend the range of a wireless network so that customers can access their network as well as the internet from more areas in their home. The enhanced speed can also provide a faster network and a better networking experience." The SRX line has begun shipping immediately. © 2005 VNU Business Online Limited (UK). © 2005 Wireless NewsFactor.

Google Offers 2GB of Free email Storage

Google offers 2GB of free email storage Posted by Matt on Friday, Apr 1, 2005, 5:09 am - Edit This Post In Admin CP Google Inc., which took the first shot in the free e-mail storage battle with the release of its Gmail product last year, said on Thursday it is doubling free storage to 2 gigabytes shortly after Yahoo Inc. matched its original offer. Google said the increase will not be the last from the company, which intends to make further free storage increases on its Web e-mail system as user needs expand. "We plan on continuing this increase for the foreseeable future," said Georges Harik, product management director for Gmail. Harik said that "less than a few percent" of Gmail users are bumping up against the 1 gigabyte limit. "We're doing it to anticipate what our users needs are and their needs grow over time," he said. The Web search leader did not immediately say how many Gmail accounts have been created. Gmail, which is still in testing, is now offered only as an English-language service. Consumers are increasingly using their e-mail inboxes to store everything from work documents and correspondence to larger digital music, video and photo files. At the same time, the price of providing Web e-mail storage has been in steep decline. Yahoo last week said it would begin giving users of its free Web e-mail service 1 gigabyte of storage, four times more than it had previously offered. "We're hoping to remove storage as a concern for Yahoo users," Yahoo spokeswoman Karen Mahon said of her company's latest move. "At a certain point beyond 1 gigabyte it just becomes a number and irrelevant to most free e-mail users," Mahon said. Yahoo Mail, available in 15 languages in almost two dozen countries around the world, gives users 2 gigabytes of storage for $20 a year. Microsoft Corp. offers 250 megabytes of storage to users of its free MSN Hotmail accounts. Like Yahoo, it offers 2 gigabytes of storage for an annual fee of $20.

Photon Processors to Enter Production in 2006

Photonics Startup Pegs Q2'06 Production Date Startup Luxtera has announced its plans to enter the CMOS photonics market, anticipating the day when microprocessors will transmit information via light, not electrons. The company claims that its optical modulator for transforming electrons into photons runs at 10-GHz, ten times the speed of an optical modulator Intel Corp. researchers began talking about last year. Beginning in mid-2006, Luxtera hopes to enter production of photonic devices using standard CMOS manufacturing processes. ADVERTISEMENT Although the majority of chip-to-chip communications are conducted using copper-based interconnects, researchers are already looking toward the day when the balance shifts toward optical transmissions, initially for chip-to-chip interfaces between microprocessors, or between a microprocessor and memory device. Fibre optics are a standard component of modern telecommunication infrastructures, and interfaces such as Fibre Channel also use optical fibre interconnects to link up devices. Although light slows down by some degree when transmitted through an optical medium, shifting to optical-based components is still too expensive than relying solely on copper, even when factoring in the additional power, heat, and crosstalk issues. "The problem here that we can solve is a matter of bandwidth," said Gabriele Sartori, Luxtera's vice president of marketing and a former advocate for the HyperTransport protocol developed by Advanced Micro Devices. Part of the relatively high cost of photonics comes from the fact that converting electrons to photons requires an intermediary device, such as the modulator Luxtera is designing. Today, that device exists as a separate module. Intel, Luxtera, and others are trying to integrate the optical waveguides within standard CMOS processes, that can be controlled by the standard voltage swings of a microprocessor. However, doing so requires that the optical vendor have close ties to a microprocessor manufacturer. At Intel, that's no problem. Luxtera, on the other hand, has worked closely with Freescale Semiconductor to develop the technology. Finding a partner like Freescale is "necessary," Sartori said. "You must walk before you can run." Freescale has taped out several engineering samples of the optical technology, including a chip, one side of which includes the optical interface built in. The sample chip use a 130-nm SOI process, the same technology used to fabricate the G4 microprocessor. Part of Luxtera's job has been to develop silicon libraries, the files used to design the photonic chips in the same way other libraries serve as the blueprint for making more conventional semiconductors. The 32-employee startup originally received $7 million funding from Sevin Rosen Funds and August Capital in 2001, followed by an additional $15 million by New Enterprise Associates in 2003. Eli Yablonovitch, a professor at UCLA who developed photoelectronic crystals, sits on the company's board, while Arno Penzias, who won the 1978 Nobel Prize for his work on the Big Bang theory, serves in an advisory role. Other board members include Andy Rappaport of August Capital, which funded Transmeta, among others.
