"Software-Patents" in Europe: The threat prevails

MIRRORS TO DOWNLOAD VIA FTP OR VIA TORRENT

Soon the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers will again decide about the legalisation and adoption of so-called "software patents" in Europe, which are already used by large companies in other countries to put competitors out of business. This can lead to the termination of many software projects such as KNOPPIX, at least within Europe, because the holders of the over 30,000 already granted "software patents" (currently without a legal foundation) can claim exclusive rights and collect license fees for trivial things like "progress bars", "mouseclicks on online order forms", "scrolling within a window" and similar. That way, software developers will have to pay the "software-patentholders" for using these features, even in their own, completely self-developed applications, which can completely stall the development of innovative software for small and medium companies. Apart from this, the expense for patent inquiries and legal assistence is high, for even trying to find out if the self-developed software is possibly violating "software-patents", if you want to continue to market your software. Contrary to real patents, "software-patents" are, in the draft proposed by the commission, monopolization of business ideas and methods, even without any tangible technical implementation.

Jet Streaming Along the Polar Front a + de 500Km/h
Home > Science and mathematics > Earth sciences and geology > Geology, hydrology, meteorology
The polar front and its associated jet stream have a major influence on the weather conditions surrounding it. Many storms form along the polar front in the vicinity of the jet stream's maximum winds. (For more on this see my previous Suite 101 article The Highs and Lows of Weather: Part 2 -- The Low) Because of the association of the jet stream with the polar front, media weather maps often include the jet stream's position as a rough indicator of continental divisions between warm and cold air masses. Here is why...etc.

Giant human skeleton found in Saudi Arabia
Recently gas exploration is going in the desert of south east region of Saudi Arabia. This desert region is called Empty Quarter, which means in Arabic "RAB - UL -KHAALEE"; this body has been found by ARAMCO exploration team. This proves what Allah SWT said in QURAN about the people of AAD nation and HOOD nation.
They were so tall, wide and very power full that they were able to pull out big trees just with the one hand. But what happen after when they become misguided and disobeys Allah SWT, Allah SWT destroyed the whole nation. ULEMA KIRAM of Saudi Arabia believes that this body belongs to AAD nation.
Saudi military took over this whole area. And nobody is allowed to go in this region except Saudi ARAMCO personnel's. Saudi government has kept it very secret but some military helicopters took pictures from air. And one of them he runs on internet here in Saudi Arabia.

Inédito: Microsoft Magazine Recommends Mozilla Firefox Instead Of Internet Explorer
Microsoft's own "Slate" online magazine is now recommending that people abandon Microsoft Internet Explorer for Mozilla Firefox, a competing free Web browser. Never before in the history of Microsoft have I seen anything quite like this. In Slate's "Webhead" column for June 30, 2004, author Paul Boutin describes Firefox glowingly and tells readers how to install it for secure Web access.
It appears that Microsoft has thrown up its hands in the wake of recent diabolical browser exploits like Scob, which captures keystrokes sent to online banks. Preventing such exploits can't be done in an afternoon.
Microsoft will need months to fix IE, and the fixing may require a fundamental redesign. Microsoft can now only recommend that users turn IE's security level up to its maximum setting, which can prevent certain Web sites from working completely.

Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation

Gordon Gould, Charles Townes, Arthur Schawlow, Theodore Maiman
The name LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. In 1917, Albert Einstein first theorized about the process which makes lasers possible called "Stimulated Emission."
In 1954, Charles Townes and Arthur Schawlow invented the Maser (Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of radiation), using ammonia gas and microwave radiation - the maser was invented before the (optical) laser. The technology is very close but does not use a visible light.
In 1954, Charles Townes and Arthur Schawlow invented the maser (microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation), using ammonia gas and microwave radiation - the maser was invented before the (optical) laser. The technology is very close but does not use a visible light.
In 1958, Charles Townes and Arthur Schawlow theorized about a visible laser, an invention that would use infrared and/or visible spectrum light.
Theodore Maiman invented the ruby laser considered to be the first successful optical or light laser. Many historians claim that Theodore Maiman invented the first optical laser, however, there is some controversy that Gordon Gould was the first.
Gordon Gould was the first person to use the word "laser". There is good reason to believe that Gordon Gould made the first light laser. Gould was a doctoral student at Columbia University under Charles Townes, the inventor of the maser. Gordon Gould was inspired to build his optical laser starting in 1958. He failed to file for a patent his invention until 1959. As a result, Gordon Gould's patent was refused and his technolgy was exploited by others. It took until 1977 for Gordon Gould to finally win his patent war and recieve his first patent for the laser.
The first gas laser (helium neon) was invented by Ali Javan.

Surgery for Eyes
Dr. Steven Trokel patented the Excimer laser for vision correction. The Excimer laser was originally used for etching silicone computer chips in the 1970s. Working in the IBM research laboratories in 1982, Dr. Rangaswamy Srinivasin, James Wynne, and Samuel Blum, saw the potential of the Excimer laser in interacting with biological tissue. Srinivasin and the IBM team saw that you could remove tissue with a laser without causing any heat damage to the neighboring material. Dr. Steven Trokel, a New York City ophthalmologist, made the connection to the cornea and performed the first laser surgery on a patient's eyes in 1987. The next ten years were spent perfecting the equipment and the techniques used in laser eye surgery. In 1996, the first Excimer laser for ophthalmic refractive use was approved in the United States.
Note: It took the observations of Dr. Fyodorov in a case of eye trauma in the 1970's to bring about the practical application of refractive surgery through radial keratotomy.
